Friday, January 19. 2007Little Miss Tin GrinAnne again. Newsflash: I hate braces. A lot. I'm talking three and 1/4 years of orthodontial agony. Here's an overview: Year 1: I start with four brackets on the front top teeth and neckgear to wear at night. This is when I developed the habit of sleeping on top of two pillows to decrease the strain on my neck. Year 2: A top retainer. Not too bad, except I had to go through impressions and I lost my retainer. Twice. I think I get my absentmindedness from my dad. Year 3: Full-on braces. No mercy whatsoever. 'Nuff said. Year 4 (2007): I get the wonderful privilege of having three different bands in my mouth 22 hours a day until February 14th. Oh joy. Right now I'm dealing with the evil bands that constrict my talking and constantly snap and interrupt whatever I happen to be doing. Today they snapped 6 times, all on the left side. It hurt. I have to go through impressions in February for another retainer. This involves filling a mold with weird clay-like stuff and sticking it in my mouth. My gag reflex almost caused me to throw up. Listen to your body: if it doesn't like it, it's usually not gonna be fun. With some exceptions. I'm telling you, the dental group does it on purpose. But there is no cloud without a silver lining. February 14th is a wednesday AND Valentines day. Perfect. I also get to pick out a really cool retainer. Something...swirled maybe. And for now, I'm driving my mom, Chester, and Chili insane by flicking the bands with my thumbnail while my mouth is open. My very own personal mouth guitar. That concludes my story today, folks. Time to go grin and bear it. Literally. P.S. I almost forgot. Hi Dad!! *waves enthusiastically and almost knocks the monitor down*

Has Anyone Seen My Soapbox? Before I begin, I need to wave to Anne. Hi Anne! *waves* Okay, that's out of the way... This article sparked a conversation this week with a close friend of mine. It is a conversation we have had before, but I might as well make it public. Well, sort of public anyway. In the faint, misty hopes that someone will actually have a COMMENT. So, I sent him the above link (you really need to read the article first), and here is his response:
It is a mess. However, for now, I will keep buying my CDs and waffling on when to start buying my next collection of movies on HD DVD or BLU RAY and in the mean time still buy DVDs. Sigh. Wow. That was a wordy response. Here was my reply. All very true…but there is one other point that, I believe, the author missed. The weavers and button-makers were allowed to get away with this because of the system of government in which they existed. They were members of guilds that wielded a lot of political power and wealth, wealth that the monarchy required in order to fund its agendas/lifestyle. In short, an imperialistic monarchy that benefited the privileged few. I think the RIAA and MPAA get away with this for the VERY SAME REASON. America is not a democracy…it is barely a republic. We have elected officials, sure, but those guys do the same things that the last guys did…everyone has their pet projects that they want funded, and their campaigns to think about, and they get there money from corporate conglomerates. our nation isn’t about individual freedoms anymore…it’s about the imposition of government will on ourselves and I’m not being anarchist, or socialist. I would like to see a return to the original American
I'm just waiting for someone to make a better button...A button that I can use in the way I deem fit for my expenditure. HelloHi everybody! This is Anne typing. I have been granted a little corner of this blog by my dad (Coy, in case you didn't know), and am planning to use it. So anyway, I am supposed to write about my life in here, so here goes. Really the only two predominate things in my life right now are school and braces. So I'll start with school. My average ratings for all my school subjects are as follows: Algebra 1 scores an average of 2/10, more or less. Meaning I like some days, others I don't. Mostly I don't. Traditional Logic scores an 8/10 on most days. I really enjoy this kind of thing. Simple apprehesion, judgement, deductive inference, etc. Science scores a 9/10 because I adore my science. Yup, I'm a science geek. Vocabulary scores a 6/10. Not my favorite subject, but it's not super challenging and I get to learn new words. Yay for big fancy words! Composition gets a 8/10 because I'm so far ahead in the curriculum that I've been doing what I love: creative writing. French has been suspended until my mom gets word on a class. So no rating for this one. Grammar gets a 6/10 because prepositional phrases are okay and most importantly, fairly easy. Reading has a score of 7/10 because Kidnapped was more of a boy book than a book that I really enjoy, in my humble opinion. History gets a score of 6/10 because I like Chinese history. However, I hate my history book. Geography is given a 5/10 simply because I don't enjoy geography. It would be lower, but at the moment I'm studying Europe and that's not too bad. Oh, and did I mention that both my history and geography textbooks are outdated by around a decade? They still get the point across though, so don't think that I'm not actually learning anything. Art history is a minor subject, but overall gets a score of 5/10. Bible has not been done in a while, so scorings have been withheld. Well, that's all of them. I only do about 7 a day, so my school usually lasts 4-5 hours, not including lunch. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that I'm homeschooled, so luckily I don't have to deal with the usual 7th grade drama. Before you label me as a wimp, try going to school with your little sister until you leave for college. Not so easy now, is it? I'll post more later but now I have to go. Ciao!
I'm so proud o' you boys. That's a direct quote from Mom. You have to play it back with full Southern accent to really appreciate it. Anyway, I am kind of proud of myself this week. I have been to the gym no less than 4 times, and will go again tomorrow to the morning spin class. I wish I could say that the pounds are melting off, but that isn't how it really works... I had the opportunity to catch up with a good friend this week. Here is his blog. I'd like to spend a moment to discuss this entry. I agree with John, almost 100%. However, intimidation is very real in a gym environment, and a huge factor for those who are new to the whole thing, or aren't in shape, or both. John and I are blessed with being above-average-height guys. Granted, he is younger than me, and in better shape as well. However, beecause of our height (I'm 6-3, he's 6-5 or something freakish like that), it is more difficult to cow us. Not that it can't be done, it just isn't as easy. I cannot say the same thing for my wife. She is below average height and, obviously, female. I think, because of that, she has a much more difficult time going to the gym and working out, because it is much easier to discourage her. Gyms, by their very nature, are intimidating to the uninitated. They are filled with complex pieces of specialized machinery. There are always, ALWAYS, people behaving as if they own the place. There are people in there that are incredibly fit, and dress to enhance that fitness, to show it off. This is MUCH MORE the case with women than men in gyms (men in lycra, no matter the level of fitness, just look ridiculous unless they are on a bike). I agree with John that these shouldn't be factors in your own fitness goals, but that's easier said than done. I think gyms can do a better job of facilitating those that are intimidated, nervous, or both. Here's a list of some of the things I would like to see at a gym.
Many of the things on my list are being done in gyms across the country. Many are not. I have a good friend who is opening a gym soon near my place of residence. I will certainly move my membership to his gym...the only thing that is keeping Teresa from doing so is the lack of a pool (she likes to swim). I know that he's going to include most of the things on my list, especially the dress code. He's also going to have a rock climbing tower in his gym, which is VERY VERY COOL. If you are not interested in any of this, I apologize. Methinks today is going to be a two-entry day anyway. Stay tuned!
