I think it's more likely that you saw a red-breasted sapsucker (http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/332/_/Red-breasted_Sapsucker.aspx) than a red-headed woodpecker, which is rare outside its normal range in the Eastern US.

So that whole "glad you guys touched down" bit on facebook; clearly I hadn't read your blog yet or I would have known that you hadn't actually "touched down safe" in Adis Ababa. Though I suppose I'm glad to know you guys "touched down safe" in Amsterdam. It's a good thing you found some monkey faced tooth paste since your eating contraban cookies; though i suppose it's not the cookies that are contraban as much as you are, being in the lounge and all! ok, hope your next flight is uneventful and you don't all go crazy from lack of sleep. hope you've enjoyed this short novel!
